We need more disabled superheroes!

Hollywood keep giving us the sad stories of disabled people. But we’d much rather see disabled superheroes!

I don’t know if you have seen the commotion surrounding the ‘me before you’ movie. If you didn’t, stop reading! I’m going to give away a really big spoiler…

The main character in the movie is a man who becomes disabled after an accident. He chooses to end his life. It’s a sad story, and one that many disabled people feel very hurt by. It doesn’t have anything to do with the freedom to choose if you want to live or not, but it’s yet another movie that gives us the feeling that live isn’t worth living when you’re disabled. I read a comment from someone saying ‘The point is that we’re not given suicide prevention, we are given suicide encouragement’. And I agree.

But I don’t want to make this a sad blog whining about movies that just have it so, so wrong… Instead, I’ll focus on movies who do it so, so right! So without further ado, here are my favorite movies with disabled superheroes in them!

1. Finding Nemo/Dory

My absolute favorite movie including disabled superheroes. First of there’s Nemo with his lucky fin. He’s become a huge rolemodel for kids living without limbs. There’s even an amazing organization called ‘The Lucky Fin project’. Then there’s Dory, who everyone just loves. Dory has short-term memory problems, which leads here to lose her parents. But her disability doesn’t define her. In fact we see her getting around in the world just fine. These movies are absolutely mustsees!

2. The Avengers – civil war

Talk about disabled superheroes! The Avengers are a huge inspiration to many people (I mean, who wouldn’t want to be a superhero?!). And in the latest installment they also touch an important story about disabilities. One of the characters named Rhodey gets in an accident and suffers a spinal injury, but that doesn’t make him want to end his life or feel sorry for himself. Instead he gets his legs in some sort of robot legs and learns to walk again. Even when he falls down, he doesn’t want his friend Tony Starks help. He’s tough. And that;s exactly what I like about him!

3. How to train your dragon 2

There are multiple characters in this movie with a disability, but the main ones are Hiccup and his dragon Toothless. Toothless becomes disabled when he loses a part of his tail and this makes him unable to fly. Smart as he is, Hiccup makes him a prostetic tail. Hiccup on the other hand loses his leg in a battle in the first movie, but it isn’t until the second movie that we see him flourishing with his prostetic leg. He’s awesome!

4. Professor X

I haven’t yet seen these movies, but professor X definitely belongs on this list! His wheelchair is such a big part of him, and it makes him the superhero that he is.

5. Soul surfer

This is the story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton. She was at the top of her game when all of a sudden she was attacked by a shark… This made her lose her arm. But Bethany got back up and tried again, and again, and again. Until she made it to the top again! Gotta love her fire :)

So there you have it, 5 movies with disabled superheroes. Not enough by far! I’m still missing so many characters, so many storylines. And also, when will disabled characters be played by actual disabled people? So Hollywood, it’s really up to you! When will you start representing the amazing, cool, creative, fashionable disabled people of this world?!
